In the photograph above, we feature one of quarrying's most powerful machines - the CAT 365CL excavator. At 65 tonnes, this machine weighs about the same as a Main Battle Tank, or – should you be of a more peaceable frame of mind - the same as 24 African forest elephants.
Wainwright, a well-known basalt-quarrying company based at Moon's Hill Quarry in Somerset, bought the machine from Finning UK in 2010. This excavator makes light work of digging and loading blasted rock onto dumpers and is the primary mover in the quarrying process. It digs out and loads approximately 420,000 tonnes of rubble per year - easy for a machine of its huge frame! In fact, it has a maximum bucket capacity of 4587.33 litres, equating to thirty times the volume of the average bath!
Wainwright has been based in the same quarry since the beginning of the 20th Century. The people who run it certainly have the experience to choose the right machines for the job at hand and this CAT certainly seems to have the right credentials!
